I've been working with VirtualBox 4.1.4 and VMWare Fusion 4 and it seems that Fusion can read virtualbox's exported vmdk files. I wasn't able to do anything with the ovf file, and fusion doesn't give you so many options for the VM so it was a case of letting Windows reinstall most of the system drivers.

At least for Fusion it doesn't seem to be as awkward as it used to be, apart from waiting a long time for the disk files to copy...

It worked to convert a disk from VirtualBox 3.2.12...

It worked to convert a disk from VirtualBox 3.2.12 to a vmware 7.1.3 on Fedora 64 (64 bits).
I converted succesfully:
* Windows XP (32 bits)
* ArchLinux (32 bits)
* Debian Squeeze (32 bits)
* Ubuntu 10.10 (32 bits)

You are not alone. It is very well possible that the converter improved in the meantime and that some of the instructions highlighted here do not apply anymore. I guess I will never know since I dropped virtualbox long ago. :-)

This was extremely helpful. My VirtualBox winxp guest on a linux host was a huge mess of trouble. I had this problem where characters sent from the keyboard would lag, and then arrive out of order in certain guest applications, and I had a all kinds of intermittant clipboard problems... really frustrating... vmware player is way more functional - far better integration with linux hosts.

i wound up just using Vmware's converter. i'm stil a bit shocked by how smoothly it went.

not really sure why i'm commenting - didn't want other frustrated virtualbox users to feel alone.
